Senior Software Engineer

About the Role

Northwind Software is hiring a senior backend engineer for the scheduling engine team, the service that builds shift schedules for more than 400,000 hourly workers every week. You will own features end to end, from shaping the problem with product managers to shipping and operating the code on AWS. You will also mentor two mid-level engineers and help set the technical direction for a core part of the platform.

What You'll Do

• Design and build backend services in TypeScript and Node that generate schedules for 400,000+ hourly workers each week
• Model complex scheduling rules such as labor laws, union agreements, and availability windows in PostgreSQL
• Ship changes behind feature flags on a weekly release cadence, then watch the metrics and follow through
• Mentor two mid-level engineers through code review, pairing, and regular one-on-ones
• Partner with product managers to turn customer scheduling problems into scoped, testable technical plans
• Improve performance of schedule generation jobs that process millions of shift combinations per run
• Take part in a shared on-call rotation and drive down recurring pager noise

What You'll Bring

• 5-8 years of professional backend engineering experience
• Strong production experience with TypeScript and Node.js
• Deep working knowledge of PostgreSQL, including query tuning and schema design for large datasets
• Experience building and operating services on AWS (ECS, Lambda, RDS, or similar)
• Track record of leading projects from design through launch without a hand on your shoulder
• Clear written and spoken communication with product and design partners
• Ability to work from the Austin office 3 days per week

Nice to Have

• Experience with constraint solvers, optimization problems, or other algorithm-heavy domains
• Background in workforce management, payroll, or other HR tech products
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures using SQS, SNS, or Kafka
• Prior experience mentoring engineers or leading a small project team
