2026 Salary Guide: What Top Roles Pay in the US & Canada

Daniel Okafor, Founder & CEO · July 6, 2026 · 6 min read

Pay transparency is no longer optional. Colorado, California, Washington, New York, Illinois, and Minnesota now require salary ranges in job postings. British Columbia has required them since 2023, and Ontario's rules take effect in 2026. The result: candidates see numbers before they apply, and employers who post vague or lowball ranges lose good applicants before the first phone call. Whichever side of the table you sit on, you need current data. Here it is.

The ranges below are estimates built from Harbor placement data across the US and Canada. Base salary only — no bonus, equity, or overtime.

What 10 top roles pay in 2026

RoleUS range (USD)Canada range (CAD)
Senior Software Engineer$130K–$170K$115K–$150K
DevOps Engineer$120K–$155K$110K–$140K
Data Engineer$120K–$150K$105K–$135K
Financial Analyst$70K–$90K$65K–$85K
Senior Accountant$80K–$100K$75K–$92K
Executive Assistant$70K–$95K$62K–$80K
Medical Billing Specialist$42K–$52K$45K–$55K
Corporate Paralegal$75K–$95K$68K–$85K
Maintenance Technician$58K–$72K$60K–$75K
UX/UI Designer$95K–$130K$85K–$115K

How to read these ranges

Treat each range as a national mid-market median band. Big metros pay a premium: expect 10% to 25% above these figures in New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, and Toronto. Contract versions of the same roles run higher on an hourly basis — often 20% to 35% above the salaried equivalent — because contractors cover their own benefits and bench time. Smaller markets and fully remote roles usually land in the lower half of each band.

Three negotiation takeaways

  • Anchor to the posted range, not your salary history. If the job lists $120K–$155K and you meet the bar, open between the 60th and 75th percentile and let the employer counter.
  • Ask one question early: where does this offer sit in the band, and what puts someone at the top? The answer tells you whether the gap is skills, tenure, or budget.
  • Negotiate the full package. A $5K base gap can close through a signing bonus, an extra week of vacation, or a six-month review with a defined raise. Get it in writing.
